Artist Bio
My inspiration and creativity is rooted in the mountains. I came to the artistic mecca of Floyd, VA about five years ago, drawn by its art, music and creative kindred spirits. When I need solitude, I retreat to my homestead in the Appalachian mountains of PA, which is a geodesic dome run off of solar power, deep in the woods. I am a founding member of The Floyd Artists Association and Art Under The Sun Gallery, located on the main thoroughfare of Floyd. I can list all kinds of credentials and awards, but they aren’t really important. What’s important about my art is touching the viewer’s soul and creating more joy in the world.
I consider myself an artist and an imagineer. I create what I imagine. Since my inspiration may lead me to solidify an idea in whatever media would be best, I've done work in sculpture, cast metal, stained glass, wood carving, ink, colored pencil, computer art, pencil, oils... but I keep coming back to watercolors. Watercolor, especially, lends itself to working “alla prima.” Capturing the inspiration in one burst of creativity. Regardless of what medium I am working in, the spirit behind all of my work is the same. That there is beauty to be found everywhere, and we are connected to Spirit in all its myriad of forms. I hope my work may cause you to pause and reflect. Taking time in a busy day to think of the beauty of creation and our connection to it.
My choice of color is not necessarily based in reality. It’s driven more by what mood will it evoke. I tend towards vivid, succulent color. One of my favorite colors in my watercolor palate is a bright magenta. It’s very warm and vibrant and just glowing with joy. It’s that emotion that I want to shine out from my art. I think that's why my artwork has evolved away from realism to expressionism. My most meaningful work is when I can capture an emotion on paper. When the colors and forms capture an archetype that bypasses the conscious brain and connects straight to the viewers' subconscious. Art that goes beyond the visual... to connect with your mind & soul.
